Students will develop their applied knowledge and skills in human biology through 2 externally examined units and 2 internally examined coursework units.

This is a Level 3 BTEC alternative academic qualification (AAQ) and is equivalent to studying 1 A level.

Year 12

Autumn Term

Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology

Human body systems, cell ultrastructure, and how substances are transported

Spring Term

Exam – Human physiology, anatomy and pathology

Health Issues and Scientific Reporting

The immune system, its dysfunction and genetic technologies; the validity and reliability of information used in health science reporting

Summer Term

Exam – Health Issues and Scientific Reporting

Year 13

Autumn Term

Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Methods of pathogenicity and infectious agents, growth of microorganisms and health and safety in a laboratory environment

Spring Term

Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies

Principles of physiological diseases and disorders and their associated drug and medicine development

Summer Term

Finish coursework unit submissions and exam resits.


Assessment at Key stage 5

Human Physiology, Anatomy and Pathology and Health Issues and Scientific Reporting are externally assessed in written exams.

Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases is internally assessed through 4 written assignments.

Diseases, Disorders, Treatments and Therapies is internally assessed through 3 written assignments.
