In sociology you will look at a range of issues across education, family, media and crime. You will look at issues such as:

  • Why are males more likely to commit crime than females?
  • How are certain groups targeted by the police?
  • How is the media controlled by wealthy businesses?
  • How does our education system teach us to conform in society?
  • In what way is the idea of childhood disappearing?

Year 1: Education, Family and methods.Year 2: Media, theory and methods

Year 12

Autumn Term

Sociology of the family and education
Examining the impact of the family and education on society.

Spring Term

Sociology of the family and education
Examining the impact of the family and education on society.

Summer Term

Sociology of crime and research methods.
Examining debates around crime in society and the ways sociologists research about society.

Year 13

Autumn Term

Sociology of crime and sociology of the media.
Examining sociological debates around crime and media in society.

Spring Term

Sociology of the media and sociological theories
Examining sociological debates around the media and developed theoretical debates in sociology.

Summer Term

Sociological theories
Examining developed theoretical debates in sociology.


Assessment at Key stage 5

Internal – half termly class assessments and two mock examinations (one in each year).

External – An end of year 13 assessment with three two hour examinations.


How can parents help support their child’s learning?

Sociology – use of revision websites such as tutor2u and Seneca, watching of documentaries related to issues in society and purchase of sociology textbooks (Webb book).
